New Reception children or those with special needs are collected from their classroom by an OSHC educator between 3-3.15pm.
Other children who are familiar with our Booking In procedure are signed in as they arrive after dismissal from their classrooms. Educators then ensure that all children booked for the afternoon session are accounted for.
After hand washing children are seated and served with a variety of nutritious snacks.
Fresh fruit and
vegetables are always included on our platters. Favourite snack items include spring rolls with Soy sauce, garlic bread, nachos, Pasta, homemade soup, watermelon and gourmet pizzas.
An initiative was funded by the Australian Sports Commission to improve fitness and provide links to sporting organisations for our children. Norwood OSHC was nominated as a ‘Super-Site’ in recognition of our contributions and involvement.
Although the Government has stopped providing us with funding the Service has continued the program as we believe it is important for our children and sporting community. The program has continued to evolve and now includes Lifestyle content as well.
The program runs for 1 hour, two afternoons a week, for 6 weeks of every term. Four or more different providers are chosen every term from the children’s suggestions. Some activities have included: karate, kick-boxing, squash, table tennis, yoga, football, korfball, multi-skills, cricket, hip-hop and other dance genres, water games and many more.
These informal discussions with children are used as a basis for programming each term.
Our
children discuss issues concerning OSHC and themselves including;
- self-mastery,
- safety,
- bullying and
- hygiene.
Discussions have generated community involvement such as visits from the Animal Welfare League, a Dental hygienist, the Red Cross and Adelaide Uni Bacteriologists.
Our Educators supervise children with equipment and resources to engage in learning and creative play in both child led and programmed activities. These can include:
- Art and Craft
- Science
- Theme based Activities
- Construction
- Board games / Card games
- Computer research / games
- Social and recreational activities
Children have the option, equipment and resources provided to engage in free play and optional activities including:
- Construction and Board Games
- Dress ups
- Creative Play
- Nintendo & Computer Games
- Games with sports equipment
Our Norwood OSHC Student Committee have taken on responsibilities involving input into
programming, implementation of OSHC standards and induction of new children. Their contributions
are recognised and appreciated by all our children and educators.
